KINGSTON, N.Y. Opinions were just about evenly split during a public hearing Tuesday before the Ulster County Legislature on a proposal to make cyber-bullying a misdemeanor with a potential jail sentence.

Supporters, including two assistant county attorneys who prosecute youth crimes and recommended the county consider adopting a cyber-bullying law, said the law would provide another tool for school administrators, law enforcement and parents in dealing with cyber-bullying.

Opponents meanwhile, said the law, which targets teens, would strip parents and schools of their authority to deal with cyber-bullying, create a new class
