Cyber crime cases shoot up post demonetisation

Hyderabad: As the month of December draws to a close, the rate of cyber crimes that was considerably low before demonetisation is rising sharply, said cyber crime cops.

“Following demonetisation, many people were forced to take to online payments to meet their daily needs. Mobile wallets like Paytm have witnessed a spike in their user base. Post-demonetisation of the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, a majority of banks, mobile applications and e-wallets have been targetted by scamsters,” said Pavan Duggal, a supreme court advocate and an expert in cyber law.

Cyber crime cops said that after December 12, cyber fraud cases have witnessed a steady increase. “Now we are getting at least four cases of credit or debit card theft every week. Apart from these cases, we are also getting One-Time Password (OTP) frauds as well,” said Raghuveer, ACP,
