Study details ways children victimized by online sextortion

A University of New Hampshire study shows that online predators use a variety of techniques on social media to victimize children.

Researchers with the Crimes Against Children Research Center at UNH interviewed young people about their experiences with sextortion, in which people exploit children to get them to send sexually explicit pictures or videos of themselves.

The study shows that technology is changing so quickly that law enforcement and public policy are playing catch-up.

“We were hearing increasingly about cases where young people were having images of them in the hands of somebody else and being used to extort money or sexual favors from them,” sociologist David Finkelhor said.

Finkelhor said the center reached out through social media sites such as Facebook to ask young people who had such experiences to be part of the study.
