California law targets abuse of power and sexual exploitation

Over the past several months, a loud national conversation has been taking place about sexual harassment and assault — in Hollywood, in business, the judiciary, and in the halls of Congress and state legislatures. The conduct revealed is not new and all stems from the same root cause — abuse of power.

For as long as we’ve documented history, people in power have chosen to abuse it. These abuses are perpetrated in many forms, but abusing power for sexual gratification is an age-old variety. The current national conversation, the #MeToo movement, and all of the women (and men) coming forward will change nothing without meaningful channels to report and respond to these abuses of power and sexual exploitation.

In October, Gov. Jerry Brown signed

By adding just a few words to California’s extortion statute, this law will protect Californians from “sextortion” by providing a clear path to report this abuse to law enforcement and a tool for prosecutors to seek accountability from offenders. Sextortion is where the currency demanded is not money but sex or sexual images. It is, at its

Five years of cyber-bullying an example of abuse nurses face

A nurse continuously cyber bullied for more than five years by anonymous blog posts, some of which falsely accused her of being a sex worker, is just one example of the abuse those in the profession now have to face, a researcher says.

Massey University PhD student Natalia D’Souza studied the experiences of nurses and found that no longer was it just traditional face-to-face bullying they had to deal with but that cyber bullying was becoming an increasing problem.

Of the eight bullied nurses D’Souza interviewed, seven of them had experienced both forms during their careers.

While other research showed many nurses experienced bullying from other staff, she was concerned to find many had been attacked by students they had taught, patients or the family of patients.

Another nurse, who worked in a mental health service, faced continuous abuse

Abuse in Pakistan: ‘I’m more scared of harassment online than offline’

In January 2016, Suman was on her way to take her university exams when she was approached by a motorbike. The man grabbed her, took her to an isolated location and poured acid on her face. Despite her shrieks for help, the area was deserted and no one came to her aid. Suman’s face burned, stinging and swelling to the point where her lips and eyes were no longer visible.

The assailant – Suman’s brother-in-law – had a long history of harassing her. In the years before the attack, he had initiated unwanted sexual advances and implored her to marry him. In 2014, her brother-in-law had even pinned her down, taking compromising photos that he stored on a USB drive.

Despite threats of physical violence, Suman was undaunted by her brother-in-law’s intimidation, filing a legal case against him. He used the illicit photos as leverage,
