Police in Leicestershire have seen a 48-fold increase in sextortion crimes over the past five years.

In 2016/17, the force recorded 48 sextortion crimes, where criminals persuade a victim to perform sexual acts in front of webcam or share explicit material before threatening to send the pictures or video to friends and family or post it online if money is not paid.

This was up from just one recorded in 2012/13.

The number of reports rose 118 per cent in just a year, from 22 in 2015/16.

Cybercrime cases in India are under-reported, say experts

New Delhi: With the centre scrambling to fortify India’s cyber operations amid growing warnings of malware attacks on personal and organizational devices, intelligence and cyber law experts have stated that much like crimes against women, India suffers from dismal under-reporting of cybercrime cases.

While the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) stated that India recorded 9,622, 11,592 and 12,317 cases of cybercrime in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively, experts stated that this data accounted for merely 1% of the cybercrimes that actually took place in the country.

“These figures do not represent the ground reality. There is massive under-reporting of cybercrime cases in India and at present these numbers represent just 1% of actual incidents,” said Pavan Duggal, a cyber law expert.

He said that people seldom come forward to report cybercrimes because of loopholes in the legal system.

“In 2008, all cybercrime offences—except child pornography, cyberterrorism and breach of protected

Cyber crime cases piling up, but only 4% detected so far in B’luru

BENGALURU : It has been just eight months since the only Cyber Crime Police Station in the city was set up, but it has already registered the highest number of complaints among all the 110 police stations, with 1,500 cases as on November 15. This is also the highest in Kranataka, considering that it was established as recently as March 28 this year.

If petitions related to minor offences are also included, the number of cases exceeds 3,000.While the police station gives an avenue for victims of Internet fraud to seek redressal, the downside is that the police personnel have been able to detect only 73 cases so far—where a chargesheet has been filed or the case disposed of.
