Spurt in cyber crime cases

About 15 days ago, Rajesh (name changed), a globetrotter, received a message on his mobile that ₹1 lakh was debited from his savings account, when he had actually not used his ATM card for the last 24 hours.

In another case, a person who has accumulated over ₹8,000 as bonus points on his credit card, received a message that the bonus points has been encashed. In another case, a businessman received a call from a person claiming to be an executive from his bank and the caller said that it was a confidential call pertaining to his credit card.

The caller specified some details that matched with his card and after gaining confidence of the businessman he asked for the OTP (one time password) number, which he divulged and within seven minutes ₹30,000 was debited from his account.

These were all new cases that have been registered with the Cyber Crime

A warning to parents: Teen ‘sextortion’ cases unfolding throughout Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Justice Department has called it “by far the most significantly growing threat to children.”

And based on recent investigations, the issue of “sextortion” isn’t slowing down, including in Utah.

Sextortion is a form of online blackmail, typically targeting teenagers or preteens.

The average sextortion case starts with children who are 12 to 14 years old who are using social media and other apps to message others who they assume are also juveniles, said Steve Cagen, head of U.S. Homeland Security Investigations in Utah and three other states. Eventually, the other “juvenile” will gain the teen’s trust and request a nude photo.

“But they’re talking to a 40-year-old or 50-year-old man, who once they have one photo will then extort them for more. It’s called sextortion. It’s happening a lot. And we are asking parents to talk to your kids, because it can happen in every neighborhood,” he said.

Roman Seleznev, 33, the son of Russian parliament member Valery Seleznev, pleaded guilty to one count of participating in a racketeering scheme, and another count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. The charges were filed in federal courts in Nevada and Georgia, and the plea deal for both cases was finalized on Thursday.

Webcam sex pics leads to doubling of ‘sextortion’ blackmail cases in a year

Sextortion, or webcam blackmail, is when criminals use the identities of attractive women – who may have been coerced into these actions themselves – to befriend victims online. They then persuade the victims to perform sexual acts in front of their webcam, record them and then threaten to share images with their friends and family unless they receive payment.

The number of cases reported to police has more than doubled between 2015 and 2016, reaching 1,250 last year. So far this year there have been more than 700 cases.

The National Crime Agency says the true number of sextortion cases could be even higher, as so many go unreported.

“We are keeping this issue on the public radar, first and foremost … making all intelligence packages are collated and gathered together to fully exploit all opportunities to put people before judicial systems,” David Jones, head of the NCA’s anti-kidnap and extortion unit, told

Alarm over steep rise in number of sextortion cases in UK

Growing numbers of people are falling victim to organised gangs who lure them into sending sexually explicit images and then threaten to post the pictures online unless they get payment.

There has been a sharp rise in webcam blackmail, also known as sextortion. The number of cases reported to the police more than doubling between 2015 and 2016, reaching 1,250 last year. This year so far there have been more than 700 cases.

The figures come as the man who blackmailed Ronan Hughes, 17, was jailed for four years. Iulian Enache, 31, shared intimate photos belonging to Ronan after the schoolboy failed to pay a ransom. The teenager killed himself hours afterwards.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) says the true number of sextortion cases could be even larger because many go unreported. It said the issue was high on its agenda.

The NCA put the rise down to
