DDoS Attacks Nearly Double Since January

Organizations experienced an average of 237 DDoS attack attempts per month during the third quarter (equivalent to eight DDoS attack attempts every day), which represents a 35% increase in monthly attempts compared to the previous quarter, and a 91% increase in monthly attack attempts compared to Q1.

That’s according to the latest DDoS Trends and Analysis report from Corero Network Security, which found that the rate of attacks, which is based on DDoS attack attempts against Corero customers, is being spurred along by the growing availability of DDoS-for-hire services, and the proliferation of unsecured internet of things (IoT) devices.

For example, the Reaper botnet is known to have already infected thousands of devices, and is believed to be particularly dangerous due to its ability to utilize known security flaws in the code of those insecure machines. Like a computer worm, it hacks into IoT devices and then hunts for new

Digital boom is a double-edged sword

The government has launched an e-government program, banks are jumping from pen and paper bookkeeping to the use of fin-tech services. SMEs and large enterprises are setting up internal networks to streamline processes and improve productivity. It is hard to comprehend the sheer scale of this process. While the new-found connectivity and digitalisation brings many benefits and opportunities, it also opens the doors to an entirely new threat – cybercrime, a phenomenon the entire world is grappling with.

In September 2016, Europol Director Rob Wainwright warned, “The relentless growth of cybercrime remains a real and significant threat to our collective security in Europe. Europol is concerned about how an expanding cyber-criminal community has been able to further exploit our increasing dependence on technology and the internet. We have also seen a marked shift in cyber-facilitated activities relating to trafficking in people, terrorism and other threats.”

Former US defence secretary Leon Panetta

Being infected by one form of ransomware is bad enough, but those unfortunate to fall victim to a new cybercriminal campaign could find themselves having to pay to decrypt their files not once, but twice.

Dirty double-crossing Rat – Secret backdoor in trojan builder kit

Dirty double-crossing Rat – Secret backdoor in trojan builder kit

A free remote access trojan builder kit that was recently observed in various cyber-crime forums secretly contains an injected backdoor module that allows the kit’s authors to take over the malware later, unbeknownst to the attackers wielding it.

According to ThreatLabZ researchers from Zscaler, the malware, dubbed Cobian RAT, is distributed via traditional spam campaigns or compromised websites, and is capable of recruiting affected machines into a malicious botnet. Upon infection, the malware can also log key strokes, take screen captures, record audio and webcam video, execute shell commands, install and uninstall programs, use dynamic plug-ins, and manage files via a file browser.

However, at any time, the original authors of the RAT builder kit can attack the attackers (aka second-level operators) by commandeering these features as well as all infected systems, using them for their own gains. This is accomplished via the

Cyber-bullying on rise; frauds double

Hyderabad:  Hyderabad city now has the dubious distinction of ranking high among cities with increasing cases of cyber-bullying, amidst 50 per cent rise in cyber crimes and 100 per cent increase in cyber fraud. Official sources claimed that many Hyderabadis were sitting ducks for cyber bullies.

The cybercrime police have taken a serious note of the recent case of game-induced suicide in Mumbai, where a student ended his life allegedly by following instructions handed by a cyber bully who had created a step–based ‘game’ called Blue Whale.

Cybercrime official had previously cautioned that citizens should be wary of fraudulent messages/mails that they receive on a regular basis. Such messages usually claim that the receiver had won million rupees and that to get that certain amount should be deposited into the sender’s account.

Interestingly, most of these scam texts/mails are sent by Nigerians and Somalis so much so that such cases are labelled

Ransomware could double this year if no action is taken: F-Secure

The growth of ransomware is likely to double in 2017 unless the governments decide to crack down on all potentially illegal payments, a European cyber security firm warned on Wednesday.

According to IT security company F-Secure, there was one known ransomware family variant in 2012 which grew to 35 by 2015 and soared to 193 in 2016.

“If the US pursues all the forms of potentially illegal payments, ransomware’s growth could be abated. Otherwise, we expect to see the new ransomware families we discovered in 2017 at least double,” said Sean Sullivan, Security Advisor at F-Secure, in a statement.

The open-source virtual currency Bitcoin has made crypto-ransomware’s business model profitable, feeding an online crime wave that has seen new extortion-enabling malware families at least double each year since 2012.

“Bitcoin survived and thrived during the last US presidential administration,” Sullivan added.

Forty-two per cent of all Bitcoin transactions last year took place in China exchanges
