Anyone who receives emails similar to this, or is threatened with compromising footage is asked to please contact police by calling 101 or emailing 101@gloucestershire.police.uk.

Necurs rides 12 million email campaign move up Most Wanted Malware list

The use of the Necurs botnet to spread Scarab ransomware over the US Thanksgiving holiday helped propel Necurs up several places on Check Point’s Ten Most Wanted Malware list for November.

Necurs pushed out a total of 12 million malicious emails in one morning in late November Check Point reported helping move it from tenth to eight place for the month. The botnet’s use as a distributor for Locky and Globemaster helped it stay relevant, but the fact that Necurs managed to regain some strength as a favored botnet was no surprise to Check Point researchers.

“The re-emergence of the Necurs botnet highlights how malware that may seem to be fading away, doesn’t always disappear or become any less of a threat. Despite Necurs being well known to the security community, hackers are still enjoying lots of success distributing malware with this highly effective infection

Fake email, stolen log-ins opened door to widespread hack on Mecklenburg County

A foreign-based hacker gained access to at least one government employee’s computer network log-in ID to launch a “ransomware” attack last week in Mecklenburg County, officials said Tuesday.

The cyber-attack knocked multiple data servers and many public services offline and caused widespread outages across Mecklenburg County systems. The county’s “IT (information technology) Incident Response Team” first learned of the problem early in the morning of Dec. 5, said IT chief, Keith Gregg.

By mid-morning, the county began shutting down parts of its network to isolate damage.

Re:Scam is the scammer email fighting chatbot

Scam emails range from funny to frustrating, with many in broken English causing the internet savvy to chuckle, while others are well-made enough to commit successful phishing attacks.

But some $12 billion is lost annually across the globe thanks to scammers, and even when we spot them they can still be a waste of time, clogging up inboxes and requiring purging.

Now cyber security firm Netsafe wants to fight back with Re:scam, an email chatbot that will reply to the scammer in a fashion that wastes as much of the cyber criminal’s time as possible.

Dodgy emails can simply be forwarded onto me@rescam.org where a proxy email address will take over and let the Re:scam chatbot go to work.

It does plenty of things a scammer would find irritating such as forgetting to send attachments and asking questions in a polite yet deliberately wind-up fashion.
