Online campaign takes on sexual harassment in India

New Delhi: At a time when the #MeToo movement has drawn global attention to sexual harassment at the work place, gender-power relations and hostile sexism endured by women, the pernicious issue of online sexual harassment of women and girls has not gained any traction in the public consciousnesses and continues to be missing from the larger narrative on violence against women.

An online anti-harassment campaign is now trying to bring public attention to the growing incidence of cyber violence and sexual abuse faced by women in India. Through hashtags, short videos, tweets, blog posts and the creative use of social media, the campaign called “#Digital Hifazat” is seeking to raise awareness about the recent but rampant, phenomenon of online harassment and the problem with existing legislation.

The #Digital Hifazat campaign was the winner of the SM4E awards in the “Online Safety” category, organized by the Digital Empowerment Foundation in 2017.

NO HOME HERE for harassment and stalking in North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire Police’s NO HOME HERE campaign continues in February with the focus on harassment and stalking.

These sickening offences have NO HOME HERE in North Yorkshire – but would you know if it was happening in your community?

Would you even realise if you, a family member or a friend had fallen victim to these types of crimes?

Throughout February, North Yorkshire Police will be raising awareness of harassment and stalking, with an aim of generating an understanding of what constitutes these crimes and what to do if someone thinks they are a victim, or knows someone who might be.

Harassment and stalking are crimes of persistence and can also often be crimes of control. This is particularly the case when the victimisation is associated with a current or previous controlling and coercive relationship.

Harassment is defined as physical, verbal and non-verbal actions directed at or towards a person by another, which causes that

Victims of Anonymous Online Harassment Suffer Serious Consequences

With the rise of #MeToo, social media and the internet have been used as a powerful tool for empowering those who have experienced sexual harassment to come forward. Through social media, victims of harassment in the workplace can identify others with similar experiences, and the impact of their combined voices can help bring about change. Yet, the online world has also proved to be a weapon frequently used by harassers, who hide behind a real or perceived protection of anonymity.

Online Harassment Statistics

Evidence suggests that online harassment is widespread and that young women suffer especially severe forms of cyber harassment. According to a 2017 study by the Pew Research Center, 41 percent of Americans have experienced some form of harassment online, and nearly 1 in 5 have experienced a severe form of harassment, such as physical threats, sustained harassment, stalking, or sexual harassment.

Unsurprisingly, women are encountering sexualized

How a former stalking victim is helping take criminal harassment out of the shadows

What followed were 11 years of constant harassment, guilt-inducing messages about how he would kill himself, and relentless stalking at her place of work, university, and every new apartment she moved to and he eventually located. Even though he later married and had children, the stalking and the messages continued.

There were so many messages over the years that Lalonde had 70 pages of documentation saved as proof for the police. His threatening presence became a permanent fixture in her life, her version of “normal.” The only thing that eventually put an end to her ordeal was that her stalker died in an unrelated accident.

While considerable focus has been put on gender-based violence, sexual assault, and domestic abuse — much of it spurred by the #MeToo movement — stalking is one area of related behaviour that doesn’t seem to get as much attention. And yet it’s much more prevalent than people

A former security guard at Faraday Future’s headquarters is alleging the start-up of dismissing multiple reports of sexual harassment she filed against one of the company’s IT administrators and even accused her of “inviting the harassment.”

The allegation stems from a lawsuit filed this summer and uncovered on Monday by The Verge. (The news outlet published the filing here.)

The plaintiff, Genesis Reyes, argues in the complaint that Faraday was more concerned with keeping its “electric car efforts secret than it was with the safety of its employees,” according to The Verge.

Here’s more from The Verge:

She claims the security cameras in the area where she worked were turned off because it was the same place that Faraday Future tested the prototypes of its car, the
