Lincolnshire Police launch cyber crime awareness campaign after fraud costs county £3.3 million

Lincolnshire Police Cyber Crime Unit is urging people to stay vigilant when online and on the phone, in a crackdown on fraud.

As pupils return to school and the autumn arrives, criminals see it as a perfect time to strike, knowing that many people will be in a rush at certain times of the day.

To fight the fraudsters, the police are launching a ‘back to school on cyber fraud’ awareness campaign.

Lincolnshire residents reported 2,120 fraud offences between October 2016 and March 2017, with a resulting loss of £3.3m.

Fifty six per cent of complaints were reported by individuals and not by companies, showing that these offences can affect anyone at any time.

These fraud offences included losses of £367,000 where fraudsters abused a position of trust and losses of £308,000 by dating scams.

Detective Inspector Joanna Reeves, Head of Cyber Crime Unit, said: “The Lincolnshire figures demonstrate that this offence

Israel Police to launch dedicated unit to fight cyber crime

Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh announced this week the establishment of a new dedicated unit to fight cyber crime both by catching offenders and by taking preventative actions.

“In the coming weeks, after a lot of work, we’ll be launching the Maor unit to fight any violence and criminal activity online,” Alsheikh said.

The unit will be numbered 105 to correspond with the hotline number it will operate. “You dial 105, it’s like the 100 emergency call center but for online matters relating to children and teens. It’ll also be accessible online,” he explained.

A NEW campaign has been launched to ensure residents across the county do not become victims of cyber-crime.

Cheshire Police and Get Safe Online launched the safe social media campaign designed to help people use social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter more safely.

ID fraudsters obtain personal information before pretending to be that individual and apply for loans or store cards in their name.

A total of 89,000 cases were recorded in the first six months of the year by UK anti-fraud organisation Cifas – a five per cent rise on the same period last year and a new record high.

The new campaign in Cheshire includes a short guide with simple safety tips on how people can protect themselves from accidentally disclosing private information to cyber criminals, what is and isn’t appropriate
