Lincolnshire Police launch cyber crime awareness campaign after fraud costs county £3.3 million

Lincolnshire Police Cyber Crime Unit is urging people to stay vigilant when online and on the phone, in a crackdown on fraud.

As pupils return to school and the autumn arrives, criminals see it as a perfect time to strike, knowing that many people will be in a rush at certain times of the day.

To fight the fraudsters, the police are launching a ‘back to school on cyber fraud’ awareness campaign.

Lincolnshire residents reported 2,120 fraud offences between October 2016 and March 2017, with a resulting loss of £3.3m.

Fifty six per cent of complaints were reported by individuals and not by companies, showing that these offences can affect anyone at any time.

These fraud offences included losses of £367,000 where fraudsters abused a position of trust and losses of £308,000 by dating scams.

Ransomware blamed for attack that caused Lincolnshire NHS Trust shutdown

RANSOMWARE is to blame for an attack which saw an NHS Trust in Lincolnshire that forced to cancel operations for four days in October.

In a statement, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust said that a ransomware variant called Globe2 was to blame for the incident.

“The cyber attack experienced by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust in October 2016 was a variant of ransomware called Globe2,” Pam Clipson, director of strategy and planning at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, told the INQUIRER.

Clipson went on to explain how the Trust sought to tackle the outbreak and revealed that almost 3,000 appointments were cancelled as a result of the attack.

“Our teams took immediate action upon detection of the attack, minimising its impact. The Trust took the decision to halt routine appointments in order to ensure patient safety while we eradicated the issue.

Globe2 ransomware blamed for Lincolnshire NHS trust cyber attack …

The cyber attack on a NHS trust in Lincolnshire that led to operations being cancelled for four days in October has been attributed to a ransomware outbreak.

In a statement circulated today, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust finally revealed the source of the outbreak, which led the organisation to shut down almost all the organisation’s IT systems, and to cancel all operations for several days until the outbreak was contained and dealt with.
