India registered over 100 per cent rise in cyber crime during 2016-17: report

Srinagar: India registered over 100 per cent increase in cyber crime during 2016-17, a two-day conference on cyber laws and cyber security being held in Srinagar was told on Saturday

As per the statistics made available to the participants of the conference, there has been a significant rise in attacks on government and private sector, particularly financial sector.

“In government sector, there has been 136 percent increase in cyber crimes while the private sector has seen 119 percent in 2016-17,” said Prof Yasir Latif Handoo, assistant professor, Kashmir Law College. He added that there is need for International Court on cyber Crime on the lines of International Court of Justice to deal with such crimes.

Stalking does take place in Goa; 50 cases registered

PANAJI: Over 50 cases have been registered against stalkers by Goa police since the last four years.

According to police, the cases were booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 354-D (stalking) as well as other relevant sections of the IPC based on the nature of complaints filed by women victims.

According to police, any man who follows a woman and contacts or attempts to contact such a woman to foster personal interaction repeatedly despite a clear indication of disinterest by such a woman, or monitors the use by a woman of the internet, email or any other form of electronic communication, commits the offence of stalking.

Four cyber crime cases registered at Sushant Lok in Gurgaon

Four cyber crime cases were registered at the Sushant Lok police station on Tuesday after investigation by the cyber cell of the Gurgaon police.

In the first instance, Faridabad resident Vasundhra Kaul, in her complaint to the police, alleged that a man posing as a bank official called her and took the details of her debit and credit cards and her account number. She said that he also took her OTP, and debited Rs36,000 from her account.

After realising that she had been duped, Kaul got her cards blocked and lodged a complaint with the cyber cell.

In another incident, Anand Kumar, who works in a private educational institution, told the police in his complaint that someone called him posing as a State Bank of India (SBI) official. The ‘official’ told Kumar that since his bank account was not linked with his Aadhar number, his debit card was being blocked.

11592 cases of cyber crime registered in India in 2015: NCRB

New Delhi: On 12 February, the home ministry website was reportedly hacked, prompting authorities to temporarily take it down. While officials denied claims of hacking, ministry data shows that in January and February 2017 alone, 39 government websites were hacked, which led the government to set up an expert group to combat cyber crime.

These weren’t the first instance of government websites being hit by cyber criminals.

According to the ministry of electronics and information technology, the number of central and state government websites that were hacked has been steadily rising—from 155 in 2014 to 164 in 2015 and 199 last year.

In all, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said in its 2016 report (for 2015), 11,592 cases of cyber crime were registered in India, leading to 8,121 arrests. While Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of cyber crimes at 2,208, Maharashtra followed closely with 2,195.

2124 cyber crime cases registered after formation of Telangana: Minister

As many as 2124 Cyber Crime cases were registered after formation of separate Telangana, Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy informed the Assembly today.

Mr Reddy said in a written reply, tabled in the house, that courses on Cyber Crime investigating, case studies, CDR analysis, social media investigation, IP address tracing were imparted during induction level and In-Service training at Police Academy.

He said that local police stations were being equipped and prepared to register and investigate Cyber Officers. CID has taken up massive capacity building programmes to develop the investigation skills of the police personnel on Cyber offences. The government also allocated Rs five crore for procurement of Software/Hardware for command and control centers in Districts and for CID. Programmes were conducted at school , college and other places to bring awareness on Cyber Crime, he said.UNI VV CS 1630
