Sextortion scam targeting men: OPP

Ontario Provincial Police are warning the public about a scam that seems to be targeting men on social media such as Facebook, dating sites or pornographic websites.

Sextortion is when people are lured into an online relationship through social media, dating sites or pornographic websites. As the relationship builds, victims are encouraged to use the computer’s camera and the scammer will coerce the victim to perform a sexual act on webcam. The victim is later advised that the event was recorded and to pay a fee or the video will be released publicly or sent to a list of friends.

How to protect yourself:

Deny any requests to perform an illicit act over the internet.

Disable your webcam or any other camera connected to the internet when you are not using it. Hackers are able to obtain remote access and record without your knowledge.

Carefully consider who you are sharing explicit videos and photographs with.

If you think you

NY needs to finish ‘sextortion’ now

ALBANY – Anyone convicted of posting revenge porn or blackmailing someone for sexually explicit material may soon have to register as a sex offender.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a proposal Thursday as part of the upcoming State of the State address on Jan. 3, saying the measure would criminalize non-consensual disclosing of sexual images and revenge porn.

“The dangerous proliferation of sextortion and revenge crimes disproportionately targets young women and girls and causes harm and embarrassment that can follow victims their entire lives,” Cuomo said in a statement.

“This new legislation outlaws this horrific, exploitive practice once and for all in New York and will help provide New Yorkers with peace of mind both on- and offline.”

The measure, which would need approval of the state Legislature, would require anyone caught sexually extorting another person; releasing damaging images; or threatening to do so, to

‘Sextortion’ cases soar as men get snared on saucy webcam recordings

Police in Leicestershire have seen a 48-fold increase in sextortion crimes over the past five years.

In 2016/17, the force recorded 48 sextortion crimes, where criminals persuade a victim to perform sexual acts in front of webcam or share explicit material before threatening to send the pictures or video to friends and family or post it online if money is not paid.

This was up from just one recorded in 2012/13.

The number of reports rose 118 per cent in just a year, from 22 in 2015/16.

One victim in 2016/17 was asked for £3,500 after criminals made a recording of him performing a sexual act on a webcam, while another asked for £3,000 or a video would be published.

Another victim engaged in webcam sex with a girl who later says she is underage, asked for £8,500 or they would go to the police, while another victim was threatened with a video being published

‘Sextortion’ legislation proposed; New Baltimore sexual assault survivor unimpressed

ALBANY — A sexual assault survivor from Greene County called Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed new penalties for predators who use the internet to settle scores and gain revenge “sexually feel-good legislation.”

Gary Greenberg of New Baltimore survived a sexual assault when he was 7 years old and said the proposal does not go far enough to end abuses — especially against children.

Cuomo announced new proposals as part of his 2018 State of the State address, which have been released piecemeal this month, that would create new penalties for predators who digitally extort sexual favors from people or upload personal sexual photographs or videos to the internet to hurt someone, also known as revenge porn.

“The dangerous proliferation of sextortion and revenge crimes disproportionately targets young women and girls and causes harm and embarrassment that can follow victims their entire lives,” Cuomo said. “This new legislation outlaws this horrific, exploitative practice once and

Governor Proposes ‘Sextortion’ Crackdown

One of the proposals Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced as part of his State of the State address involves what’s called “sextortion” or “revenge porn.”

The governor’s proposal suggests that any conviction of sextortion and non-consensual pornography will require people to register as a sex offender.

It will also result in more serious charges involving jail time.

“I would say it’s prevalent everywhere and it’s not all with the intent of criminal behavior,” Jefferson County Sheriff’s Detective Paige Taylor said.

“However, it very quickly makes a young person a criminal and a potential felon on a first time offense and that concerns me,” she said.

In a press release, Cuomo said, “this new legislation outlaws this horrific, exploitive practice once and for all in New York and will help provide New Yorkers with peace of mind both on and offline.”

The governor will present the full State of the State message in January.
