How Shay Mitchell Teamed Up with Ashton Kutcher to Fight Sexual Harassment Online

Sexual exploitation can take place in a variety of ways — but in the digital age, it’s largely happening via computer and phones screen in the form of “sextortion.”

Never heard of the term? Well, Shay Mitchell can explain. The Pretty Little Liars actress recently teamed up with Thorn, a nonprofit organization cofounded by Ashton Kutcher dedicated to building technology to defend kids from sexual abuse.

In an animated PSA video narrated by Mitchell, a cat character breaks down the term sextortion, which is a cybercrime that relies on victims feeling too ashamed to ask for help when an abuser threatens to distribute their intimate images — a huge problem among teens today.

“Okay, so you did a thing,” Mitchell says in a voiceover. “You sent a picture of yourself with no clothes on — something you thought wouldn’t be shared.”

“Seemed like a good

Pope Francis Says Tech Companies Should Protect Children From Sexual Exploitation, Cyber Bullying

Pope Francis told executives of leading internet companies on Friday to use “their great profits” to defend children from sexual exploitation and other dangers lurking online.

The pontiff, speaking at a conference in Rome, said the Catholic Church needed to accept responsibility “before God, victims, and public opinion” for its own sex abuse scandals, but wanted to share the lessons it had learned.

Speaking to participants including representatives from Facebook fb and Microsoft msft , he said social media businesses had to do more than set up filters and algorithms to block harmful content.

The 80-year-old pope spoke out against the spread of extreme pornography, the dangers of so-called “sexting” between young people and between adults and children, and cyber bullying, calling it “a true form of moral and physical attack.”

He said

Sexual extortion will be considered a criminal act in California

Sexual extortion will be considered a criminal act in California under legislation signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

SB 500, by Sen. Connie Levya (D-Chino), will add coercion involving sexual acts and sexually explicit images — known as “sextortion” — to the state’s extortion laws.

“The Governor’s signature of SB 500 tells sextortion victims that they matter and that they absolutely deserve to be able to receive justice in a court of law,” Leyva said in a statement.

Perpetrators of sextortion obtain private images by hacking into victims’ computers or smartphones to demand sex or more images, she said.

About 78% of sextortion victims are girls with an average age of 15, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The bill will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018.

Privacy and security precautions on the Dark Web haven’t kept authorities from making arrests.
Nate Chute/IndyStar

This is how an online predator sets his trap.

“He messaged me, flirting with me.”

“It started out innocent enough, but then it got more and more sexual, and they ended up asking for pictures.”

“I know I didn’t have to, but I felt obligated to return the favor.”

“After I didn’t want to continue sending pictures, he threatened to create a Facebook page with my nudes.”

Chatting. Flirting. Preying on insecurities.

Caught!
