Cyber crime: Overseas students selling bank accounts to fraudsters after finishing studies, police

JOHNSTON PRESS INVESTIGATIONS: Chris Burn, Aasma Day, Cahal Milmo, Don Mort, Ruby Kitchen, Paul Lynch, Oli Poole, Gavin Ledwith, Ben Fishwick, Philip Bradfield and Deborah Punshon

Overseas students are selling their British bank accounts to foreign criminals to be used in frauds, a senior police officer has said.

Detective Inspector Chris Felton, from the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and City of London Police, told a cyber-crime conference in Leeds that “There is a market for second-hand bank accounts for those involved in illegal activities online – with students who have left the UK being prime targets.

“If I am a student, I have studied in the UK, I have finished my three years, got my degree, I have got a bank account and someone is going to give me a couple of hundred quid for the bank out, I’m not coming back so I’ll sell it,” he said.

askST: What disciplinary actions can schools take against students …

Reader Chong Tack Mien wanted to know what disciplinary actions schools can take against students who are cyber bullies.

Mrs Chong said that cyber bullying cases are not uncommon in her 15-year-old daughter’s class. In a recent incident, the perpetrators were given a verbal warning by the school’s vice-principal, but that did not stop them from continuing to victimise a classmate online.

She called for more to be done to deter such virtual attacks, which may result in actual harm, and asked: “Are the rules and regulations of the school updated to deal with such crimes?

Education reporter Calvin Yang found the answers.

With the Internet, bullying does not stop in school. These days, the online space has become a new playground for bullies to carry out their taunts and threats.

Cyber bullying happens when someone hurts, harasses and threatens another over digital devices and related platforms, such as social media, blogs and text messages.

EOCO educates students on dangers of cyber crime

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has embarked on a programme to educate students of 50 senior high schools (SHSs) in the Greater Accra Region on the dangers associated with cyber crime.

The initiative will expose students to financial, economic, moral and other related offences associated with the use of the internet and the corresponding punishment for those involved in the menace.

Held on the topic “Prohibited cyber activities”, the programme will also use graphic images of young people who became addicted to cyber crime and occultism and the horrific consequences they suffered for engaging in internet fraud (popularly called Sakawa) and occultism.

So far, the sensitisation has been held in seven schools, which are the Wesley Grammar SHS, Accra Wesley Girls SHS, Accra Girls SHS, Accra Technical Training College, St Thomas Aquinas, Accra High School and Holy Trinity Cathedral SHS.

Indiana universities prepare students to battle cyber crime – WNDU

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Government intelligence agencies have recognized an Indiana university for its work in cyber security.

The Tribune-Star reports that earlier this month the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security designated Ivy Tech Community College as a National Center of Academic Excellence in its cyber defense education program.

The NSA says the program’s goal is to reduce vulnerability in the country’s information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research in cyber defense.

The university’s two-year cyber security and information assurance program covers how to prevent a hack and requires students to be familiar with networks, software and server administration.

Indiana State University will soon offer a cybersecurity studies program that will focus on human mistakes that can lead to security breaches.
