Oct. 16: Cyber Crime Symposium for Educators, Parents, Students

The United States Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and a coalition of other law enforcement agencies and community organizations are hosting the 9th Annual Cyber Crime Prevention Symposium on Monday, October 16 from 8:25 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

More than 450 educators, parents, and middle and high school students are expected to attend the daylong conference at the California Endowment Center for Healthy Communities, 1000 N. Alameda Street in downtown Los Angeles.

The symposium will address a wide range of Internet-related security and safety issues. Speakers will address and lead discussions on topics that include child exploitation, cyberbullying, the implications of digital communication on teen health, digital reputation, navigating peer pressure, social media, sexting and sextortion.

This year’s symposium will feature a youth panel presentation on social media, a SnapChat geotag and a surprise appearance during the lunch break by celebrity guests from Disney.

FBI Says Chehalis District Was Warned of ‘Concern’ for Students in ‘Sextortion’ Case

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is challenging a statement from the Chehalis School District that cited a directive from the FBI as the reason the district didn’t take action to separate a boy from the estimated 20 classmates who were among the dozens of victims he allegedly solicited illicit photos from and extorted. 

“An FBI agent on multiple occasions emphasized concern for the safety of all students involved and recommended the school follow its applicable district policies for such matters,” according to a statement from the FBI sent to The Chronicle Thursday from Public Affairs Officer Ayn Dietrich-Williams. “The FBI did not provide any specific instruction on how the school should proceed, aside from advising that the school take the measures it deemed appropriate to keep students safe.”

Indian students face more cyber bullying than those in UK: Study

At a time when parents are already nervy over the series of deaths of teenagers hooked onto the ‘Blue Whale’ challenge, a new study by Punjabi University, Patiala, has found that Indian school students actually face more online and offline bullying than those in some western countries.The findings, part of an upcoming publication titled “Bullying, cyberbullying and pupil well-being in schools: Comparing European, Australian and Indian Perspectives,” by Cambridge University Press, is being touted as India’s first multilateral social science research collaboration.

Dr Damanjit Sandhu, associate professor, department of psychology, Punjabi University, who was a part of the project, said bullying was found to be most prevalent among school children in India. Data was collected from 219 pupils in Amsterdam; 537 in Munich’ 815 in Annamalai; and 480 in Patiala. It was found that 77% of school children in India reported being a victim of
