Returning the power to your security teams with threat hunting

As more advanced attack techniques and tools become more accessible in the cyber criminal community, companies are increasingly turning to a more proactive approach to security. An important part of this approach is looking for evidence of potential threats which may already be in their systems.

Implementing an incident response (IR) plan is a great place to start, but is too reactive – by the time you are notified of a breach, it could be too late. Likewise, organisation have now realised that waiting for antivirus and other security solutions to alert them of unusual activity is not a good enough approach for detecting sophisticated and stealthy adversary.

Instead, organisations can combine an IR plan and traditional AV defences with more proactive techniques such as threat hunting to give organisations the best chance to avoid cyber criminals gaining access to their IT environment. Threat hunting enables security teams to confidently answer the

Its Tax Time – Alert Your HR and Payroll Teams About W2 Phishing Scams

Last February, the IRS issued a warning to all employers regarding the resurgence of a W-2 based cyber scam. The scam, which targets businesses during tax season, was also “spreading to other sectors, including school districts, tribal organizations and nonprofits.” In August 2017, the IRS renewed its warning to tax professionals and businesses as part of its “Don’t Take the Bait” campaign. In October, the IRS reminded the public about its procedures for reporting successful or failed attempts. With the tax season quickly approaching, it’s worth re-visiting how an employer can fall prey to this scam, describing how they can avoid it, suggesting they have a response plan in case they are a victim.

The cyber-scam consists of an e-mail sent to an HR or Accounting department employee, presumably from an executive or “higher-up” within the

Cisco teams up with Interpol to fight cyber crime

IANS | Updated: Nov 21, 2017, 03.53PM IST

SINGAPORE: Intensifying the fight against cyber crime, networking giant Cisco and international police organisation Interpol on Tuesday announced an agreement to share threat intelligence.

The alliance will see the two organisations develop a coordinated and focused approach to data sharing, Cisco said in a statement.

This not only will allow for quick threat detection around the world but also pave the way for potential future collaboration on training and knowledge sharing, it added.

“The exchange of information and expertise between the public and private sectors is vital in combating cyber crime. No country or company can do this alone,” said Noboru Nakatani, Executive Director of the Interpol Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) in Singapore, which serves as Interpol’s global cyber crime centre.

BT teams up with Interpol to fight cyber-crime

BT has announced it will begin working with Interpol in the battle against cyber-crime.

The UK’s biggest telecoms provider has signed a data exchange agreement that will see the company work together with Interpol to monitor both existing and emerging online threats.

Going forward, Interpol will be able to call on BT’s threat intelligence experts for insight into current cyber threats and criminals operating around the world as it looks to boost its own Interpol Global Complex for Innovation facility (IGCI).

“The scale and complexity of today’s cyber-threat landscape means cooperation across all sectors is essential if we are to effectively combat this global phenomenon,” said Noboru Nakatani, executive director of the IGCI. “Interpol’s agreement with BT is an important step in our continued efforts to ensure law enforcement worldwide has access to the information they need to combat these evolving cyber threats.”

Latest ransomware: enterprise IT teams earn flak

Ross Brewer, vice-president and managing director of international markets at LogRhythm, said both WannaCry and the latest attack showed “the lack of accountability and focus on basic IT and security fundamentals”.

“Core IT operational competencies, such as patch management, back-ups, disaster recovery, and incident response are not well implemented or maintained,” he said.

“These are absolutely essential in protecting your company from damaging cyber threats and without them you are left in a perpetually vulnerable state, a sitting duck for these types of attacks, merely hoping that you aren’t compromised. The only actions you take are responsive, only after some other unlucky company was compromised.”

Brewer said that security vendors were often criticised for fear mongering and exaggerating the possible consequences of a cyber attack.

“But I think we can agree that recent events are starting to show that the warnings were warranted,” he said. “These attacks are targeting our top businesses, banks, healthcare
