‘Revenge porn’ bill would criminalize posting nude photos without consent nationwide

Enough is enough when it comes to posting explicit content, like photos or videos with nudity, without consent. 

The practice, known as “revenge porn” or “sextortion,” has been in the spotlight recently due to high-profile cases involving celebrities, such as Mischa Barton and Blac Chyna, but it doesn’t just hurt victims in the public eye. 

Yet there’s no federal law that protects victims whose private images have been exploited online. What victims are left with is a patchwork of laws across 35 states, and legal hurdles if their perpetrators cross state lines.

LeakerLocker Android Malware Is Mobile Ransomware Without The Encryption

Android mobile ransomware that acts without encryption has been discovered by cyber security firm McAfee, noting the malware extorts payments out of its victims by threatening to spread private information. 

Dubbed LeakerLocker, the ransomware lurks behind two apps on Google’s Play Store; Wallpapers Blur HD and Booster Cleaner Pro, both of which are supposedly well-rated apps that have been downloaded thousands of times. 

Google has been alerted to the threat by the McAfee Mobile Malware Research team and is currently investigating it. 

LeakerLocker ransomware 

LeakerLockerThrough exploiting the higher level of permissions a user allows the infected apps due to the services they offer such as boosting performance and managing apps, LeakerLocker starts its malicious activity as soon at the infected app is booted.

Many will commend the recent demand by Home Secretary Amber Rudd that social media providers hand over the encrypted messages of terror suspects.

I wish her well, but fear cyber crime can only flourish if we fail to update legislation to combat it.

The new Abusive and Sexual Harm Act which makes it easier to prosecute revenge porn – where intimate images are shared without consent – is one step in the right direction.

Last year slightly over 50 per cent of crime committed in Scotland had an internet basis. Cyber crime costs Scottish business £2 billion, while, depending on which report you read, between 10 and 40 per cent of adults have experienced online abuse. Every day we read about cyber bullying, revenge porn, trolling, virtual mobbing and vulnerable youngsters being driven to suicide.
